“Dr. Western helps us to obtain greater insight into the enigma of leadership.” Manfred Kets de Vries Director INSEAD Global Leadership Center.
Organizations are changing fast, driven by emerging new technologies and globalization, that makes our world smaller and more inter-dependent. This demands new forms of leadership.
Coaching also has to make a step change, and shift its paradigm from offering coaching tools and technique approaches that mimic the machine metaphor of 20th century management thinking,
‘find the tools to fix the problem’.
The 21st century organizational and leadership metaphors are networks and eco-systems, in place of control and hierarchy. Leadership has to become more adaptive, ethical and distributed and coaching has to discover ways of supporting these ‘Eco-Leaders’ (see Western 2008, Leadership a Critical Text, Sage for full description of Eco-Leadership).
